In today's world of gadgets, gizmos, and electronic games, it's no wonder that unemployment is so huge. You may be thinking that this statement is completely not true and has no real bearing on unemployment (you're probably right) but, hear me out.

The latest time sucker in the lives of millions across the globe is the iPhone. Providing literally thousands of applications and games, users of this magical device find themselves glued to its tiny screen. For what, you might ask? Addicting applications like iFart, PocketGod, or even The Price Is Right (TM).

While all of these and more have been responsible for millions of hours of lost time and productivity, a new "game" is set to be the mother of all time killers. Before revealing it's name, it's important to understand how these games affect the economy.

It's so attracting ... a cute game, a useful app, but that's where it all starts. After a user begins to play, little do they see that time itself actually increases in speed during use! That may be hard to swallow but it's actually true (unverified)...

I'm sure you're starting to see how this affect the lives of so many innocent users... they start to play the game and miss deadlines, become late for work, stay up later, etc. Now you see why the over 20 million users of the iPhone are losing their jobs?

This problem is only made worse when the user tries to get employment to replace the old. Missing interviews, playing games in their laps during interviews, adding "professional iPhone game player" to their resumes, it's absolutely horrifying.

There is a new iPhone game set to be released that could make this problem even worse. We're not talking about a little worse, but a global pandemic. The majority of which lost their jobs (unconfirmed), grew their hair out (due to loss of time), and are losing weight very quickly (actually a benefit of this satanic game).

Sure the game itself is a sweet "Tower Defense" game, it has an addicting game play, beautiful explosions, great music, and sweet graphics which could be nothing short of satanic. I do recommend you join me in NOT buying this evil application from the app store on the iPhone when Warp Defense is unleashed. Join me! Don't purchase into the addicting and so called "entertaining" game ever to be played on a mobile device.

Apple has never been one to be overly communicative with their developer community and the iTunes App Store is no exception. There is often little communication between Apple and developers when it comes to why an app is rejected or why its launch in the store is delayed. Now with the recent removal of all Google Voice related applications from the App Store - and again, with no explanations - at least one developer has had enough.

But lack of communication is only one of the issues with today's App Store approval process. O'Reilly Research is reporting today that the incubation period for apps is now trending upward - a figure that seems to speak to Apple's becoming overwhelmed by the number of submissions. And finally, courtesy of Apple's mysterious approval process, they've accidentally let yet another "adult"-themed application into the App Store once again.

"I Can't Say. It's Just Against Our Policy"

For four months, the developer of a third-party Google Voice application known as VoiceCentral hosted his application in the iTunes App Store. Then, one day, it was gone. There was no advanced notice and absolutely no explanation from the company. He contacted Apple for help. After a frustrating conversation with Apple employee "Richard," the developer realized that Apple was simply refusing to discuss the problem. The conversation, a snippet of which is embedded below, is beyond absurd (Note - the developer says the conversation is not verbatim):

Richard: "I'm calling to let you know that VoiceCentral has been removed from the App Store because it duplicates features of the iPhone."

Me: "I don't understand that reasoning. By that logic wouldn't apps like Textfree, Skype, fring, or iCall be considered duplicates?"

Richard: "I can't discuss other apps with you."

Me: "It's not the apps themselves I want to discuss just the lack of consistency in rule enforcement."

Richard: "I can only say that yours duplicates features of the iPhone and was causing confusion in the user community. It's against our policy."

Me: "So what has changed that it is now against policy? It has been in the store for the last 4 months with no problem. There wasn't a problem for the 1.5 months prior to that when you were 'reviewing' it. And this didn't come up with any of the updates we submitted after it was already in the store."

Richard: "I can't say - only that yours is not complying with our policy."

Me: "Can you tell me what portions of the app were duplicate features?"

Richard: "I can't go into granular detail."

Me: "Is there something we can change or alter in order to regain compliance and get back in the Store?"

Richard: "I can't say."

Me: "Well if we can't figure out the issue then how will we know whether to resubmit the app. And how will we know whether to invest in any other development efforts? Future apps could be impacted."

Richard: "I can't help you with that"

Along with the removal of the third-party applications, Apple also gave the boot to the official Google Voice Application at the same time.

Some tech pundits reported it was AT&T who was behind the removal of these apps, since the Google Voice app essentially turns the iPhone into a dumb data device that routes calls over the iPhone's data connection instead of over AT&T's network - you know, the network where they get to charge you big money for long distance phone calls and such. Others weren't so sure that AT&T was to blame, since there are still a number of other VoIP applications available in the App Store now including My Skype, TruPhone, Nimbuzz, and Fring.

Sadly, the real truth may never be known because Apple isn't talking.

For one Apple developer, Steven Frank, watching the Google Voice debacle unfold was enough to put him off developing applications for Apple products altogether. Interestingly enough, Frank is not an iPhone developer - he develops apps for the Mac. But seeing how Apple was treating the mobile developer community left him "frustrated and disappointed," he wrote in a candid blog post.

"I've reached a point where I can no longer just sit back and watch this. The iPhone ecosystem is toxic, and I can't participate any more until it is fixed. As people have told me so many times: It's Apple's ballgame, and Apple gets to make the rules, and if I don't like it, I can leave. So, I don't like it, and I'm leaving."

As for Google themselves, they aren't sharing what (if any) conversation occurred between the two companies about the Voice app's removal. But given the somewhat incestuous relationship between both industry giants (Apple and Google share two board members: Google CEO Eric Schmidt and former Genentech CEO Arthur Levinson), we'll probably never hear from them either.

Delays, Delays, Delays

When it comes to getting an application published, there's no doubt that Apple's queue of apps pending approval is likely the largest in the business. That's probably why the company is unable to offer consistent and reliable lead times for app approval to their developers. Some apps seem to get approved in a reasonable amount of time while others have actually sat in limbo for as much as six months.

And it's not just approvals that are subjected to this process. Application updates - patches that add features and fix major problems - are stalled for weeks on end at times, too. Says one iPhone developer: "I'm not happy with delays involved, and the seemingly arbitrary favoritism that's evident. It's either favoritism or just general chaos."

Today, new findings from O'Reilly Research put hard numbers to these sorts of complaints. They show that Apple's incubation times are now trending upward. The "incubation time" is the period between the release date of an app and the date it first appears in iTunes. The release date of an app refers to the date developers upload their apps to iTunes Connect, the area where apps are managed. In between the release date and when the app appears in iTunes, Apple performs a number of undisclosed QA tests before making the app live in their store. Because a shorter incubation period translates to a more favorable position when users sort apps by release date, developers prefer to see the shortest incubation periods possible.

As more apps are launched each week, the incubation period for these apps is increasing, says O'Reilly. They found that the mean incubation period for all app categories except for Travel is now on the rise.

The findings also reveal some other interesting trends, too. For example, although more games are launched each week, Music apps spend more time in the approval process. (No doubt while Apple verifies whether or not the app competes with iTunes).

Then there is the issue of Apple telling a developer that their app will go live on a particular date but it doesn't happen. The most recent example of this was with the new my6sense application. Because the company's PR department had already briefed a number of bloggers with the information, articles were published anyway, albeit with an update about the delay. Unfortunately for the company, this was not the ideal situation. How awful must it have been to see post after post about the app go live without any download link included in any of them. That's not just disappointing for the blog readers who can't try the app right away, it no doubt affected the company's bottom line, too.

That App Should Not Have Been Approved

Although Apple won't reveal any details of their mysterious approval process, a number of "oopsies" and oversights lead some to wonder if there isn't some sort of automation involved. That's the only explanation as to why some apps, like the horrid "Baby Shaker" game (where you shake the baby until red X's appear over his eyes) could have ever made it through. Such an oversight surely was not made by an actual person - at least not one who wanted to keep their job, that is.

Other questionable applications have also been pulled like BeautyMeter, a "Hot or Not" type of app where user-submitted photos are voted on and rated. Some users went too far with their photos, leaving Apple to finally pull the app when a 15-year-old girl uploaded nude photos of herself. That occurrence made the app go from being risque to downright illegal in an instant. Perhaps Apple just didn't see the potential dangers of that type of application, but their latest mistake again highlights the obvious holes in their approval process.

For a brief period of time yesterday, Apple was hosting an app called theXchange whose sole purpose is to connect people who want to have sex. Clearly, this app should not have made the cut given Apple's policies. So again, one has to wonder: what is going on with the approval process?

Apple Needs to Shape Up

There's no doubt that Apple is struggling with the large number of apps, the high visibility of their platform, and having to balance their goals with those of their carriers like AT&T. However, the problems, the delays, and, most importantly, their refusal to discuss the issues, is starting to give the company a bad reputation. For now, the souring feelings for Apple are probably just occurring in the developer community and among and tech pundits who watch the company closely. Still, it's already been bad enough for some developers to bow out and for some high-profile tech bloggers to announce they're ditching the iPhone for good.

If Apple can't address these issues in a timely fashion, then maybe it's time for them to lift their cone of silence and say - if not why the issues have happened - then at the very least, "We're Sorry."

How Did it Get so Popular? Apple's App Store Hits 1.5 Billion Downloads and 65,000 Apps

Earlier today, Apple announced that iPhone and iPod touch users have now downloaded over 1.5 billion applications. According to Apple, there are now also over 100,000 developers in the iPhone Developer Program and over 65,000 apps in the store. The number of actual iPhone developers might be a bit lower than Apple reports, as a lot of people only joined the paid version of the program to get their hands on the betas of the iPhone 3.0 OS, but there can be little doubt that the App store is a runaway success, both for Apple and developers. Given this huge success of the App Store, it is worth thinking about the factors that contributed to the App Store's success and what Apple could do to make the store even better.

Some other platforms had something similar to the App Store long before Apple, and others are still trying to copy the App Store, but Apple has clearly set the bar very high. Even though a number of companies are trying to emulate the App Store model now, we think that a number of factors contributed to Apple's massive success. Some of these may be very hard to replicate for other companies.

Here are a few of the them:

pump was primed: with the iPod, Apple had already familiarized millions of people with iTunes and the idea of buying music and videos content for their devices on iTunes - moving to applications was a natural next step

it's not just the iPhone: by creating an ecosystem that both iPhone and iPod touch users can tap into, Apple greatly expanded the reach of its app store. Apple says it has shipped over 40 million devices with the iPhone OS on it. This means that, on average, iPhone and iPod touch owners have downloaded an average of around 38 apps per person, which is not an outrageously high number.

pricing: allowing free apps into the store and distributing them for free was a very smart move by Apple. This allows new users to become comfortable with the App Store concept and gives developers a chance to showcase free versions of their paid applications and games. Also, by allowing developers to charge as little as $0.99 for an app, developers can reach a lot of users while still getting paid for their work.

international reach: there are App Stores in 77 countries and very little content is restricted to specific countries

games: almost every application in the list of top paid and free apps (iTunes link) is a game. The iPhone (and the iPhone 3GS even more so) is a great mobile gaming machine and given that most games are quite cheap, who can really say no to the Moron Test or Real Soccer 2009 (which at $0.99 is quite a bargain)?

low barrier of entry for developers: you don't have to pay to start developing (assuming you have access to a modern Mac), and if you are already a Mac developer, developing for the iPhone OS is relatively easy, as you use the same tools as before.

a chance to make money: of course, it also helps that Apple provides a central hub for all the apps and at least gives developers the impression that even small development houses or a guy in his parents' basement is playing on the same level as Electronic Arts or Gameloft.

Some things we would like Apple to change/add:

improve the approval process: it's no secret that the process to get an application into the store is rather arcane and that Apple regularly refuses to let apps into the store for seemingly random reasons.

"remember this iPhone app" - our own Marshall Kirkpatrick would really like to see Apple add a way to mark apps in the store so that he could buy them later. This could look something like wish lists on Amazon or Newegg

How I Met My Dream Girl With The Help Of A Humble IPhone App

I didn't have much luck with girls in high school. I remember a few really awkward dates. I was a nerdy kid. I like math, science, and reading. At my school, those definitely weren't the popular things to do.

A few weeks ago, I was having some coffee with friends when I saw this beautiful girl across the coffee shop. She was engrossed in her iPhone. I imagined her texting her boyfriend. Then she noticed me and smiled.

She noticed I was staring, I was sure. I got embarrassed, and tried to play it off. My friend Josh saw what happened and tried to get me to talk to her, but I just started sweating. I wanted to leave, but he talked me down. So we just kept hanging out.

It might seem a little rude or stalkerish, but I took a picture of her with my iPhone. I got in line at the teller, and while she was looking out the window, I pretended to be fiddling with my phone. The picture was really nice. There was nice lighting that really made her look angelic.

On the way home on the bus, I was feeling very inspired to create something. She was just so beautiful, I couldn't keep her out of my mind. I wanted to do something that would show how pretty she was to me, sitting there next to the window. I opened up this new app I had bought called Comic Genie.

Comic Genie is a neat little app that puts talk bubbles in any picture. It's like in a comic strip. I had downloaded it, but I hadn't gotten a chance to use it. Now was the perfect opportunity! I opened up the picture from my library so I could make it into a nice comic.

At first, all I could look at was her beautiful face haloed by a ray of sun coming in through the window. What a great picture! After staring at it for a while (she really was beautiful!), I noticed that there was something sitting in the corner of the window. It was a little bird, like a baby pigeon, that had come to perch on the windowsill outside. From the angle of the picture, it looked like the bird was looking right at the girl.

Then it hit me! I double-tapped to add a talk bubble. Then I typed a corny message into the bubble: "I wish I could sit with you, pretty bird." I was in a corny, lovey mood. Sue me. It might have been simple, but the fateful events that followed still amaze me!

I take lots of pictures with my iPhone. That's basically the reason I got Comic Genie. I like expressing my creativity. I wanted to add something personal to my photos, so when I shared them with friends, it's like I made them.

When I got home, like I usually do, I synced my iPhone with my computer and got all the photos off. I then uploaded everything to Facebook, which I guess is a habit of mine. I was still distracted by her, I guess. I mean, who uploads pictures of people they don't even know to Facebook?

I checked my email the next day, and found that I had a friend request. I opened it up, and was startled to see that it was from the pretty girl I had seen yesterday. How could she find me? She said "This comic is so sweet! Did I see you at the coffee shop yesterday?"

Really, I was confused. How did she find me? I started thinking of all the possibilities, then I remembered that I uploaded my photos to Facebook. I took a deep breath. I check out her profile, and saw that we did have a friend in common. It was Alex, who kind of knows everybody. He had recognized her in the comic and tagged her face. She was notified and there you go!

I cautiously clicked "accept" on the friend request. She must have been online, because she messaged me seconds after I clicked. Not to drag on too long, but she liked taking photos so she was cool with what I had done (what a relief!), wanted to get together, and thought I was good looking. We met again at the coffee shop and I showed her how I made to comic on Comic Genie. She bought it, too, and we spent the afternoon taking photos and making comics. What a wonderful day!

So that's how I met Julie, he prettiest girl in the world!

Almost anyone knows what an iPhone is. The iPhone has been at the center of almost all technology discussions over the last few years. That being said, most people don't have any idea what a netbook is. A netbooks is a mini laptop designed for customers on a budget or those wanting a smaller solution to their full size laptop.

The iPhone definitely has some similarities to the family of netbooks. The question is, which is a better device? We will look at a few functions of each device.

Turning The Device On

Both have a simple on button but time to take to load up varies. With Linux, the time can be as short as 15 seconds, although Windows XP will take longer. The iPhone will take around 20-25 seconds from turning on to being ready to use. Winner is this category: Netbook

Typing On The Device

Typing on both isn't the same as on a desktop, but the netbook still has the edge here. It has a full qwerty keyboard rarely less than 80% the size of a full size keyboard. It takes practice to type quickly on the iPhone's 3.5" touch screen - I find it fastest with two thumbs, but accuracy is compromised. If you need to be accurate, using the corner of your finger helps. Still, it's difficult; especially when you've got a protective case on to stop scratching the back. Winner is this category: Netbook

Browsing The Net

The iPhone is limited in its browsing functions simply because of the Safari browser. Netbooks are capable of running Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Safari. You can surf the internet much easier with a netbook than an iPhone. Winner: Netbook

Portability

The Apple iPhone can fit in just about any pocket. The netbook has to be carried in a bag or in hand. The obvious winner is: iPhone

Cost Of The Device

A netbook will usually cost around $200 - $300. Most netbooks will not ever cost more than $300. iPhones range in price with the cheapest version costing around $99 (if you are running on the AT&T network). If you are looking for an unlocked iPhone, they are usually costing buyers around $400 to $500. Winner: Netbook

Overall, the netbook is the better choice for people looking for a portable computer.

Users of NewsGator's NetNewsWire iPhone news reader will have to wait a little longer for the next version of that application because its creator, Brent Simmons has been busy working on a new iPhone framework called TapLynx. The goal of TapLynx is to help users generate topic-focused media applications for the iPhone without any programming required. The first application, created by Simmons, has already been built for All Things Digital.

If you have just bought an iPhone, you are probably thinking of ways you can download videos to iPhone. After all, watching videos can be very entertaining. A lot of people are hooked to it. Downloading videos to your iPhone means that you can watch your favorite videos anytime and anywhere.

First, though, you need to download the YouTube to iPhone converter. This application is free and it comes with no viruses or spyware.

Assuming you have already done that, you can now add your favorite YouTube video links. Then choose a location where you wish to store the downloaded video files and convert the files to MP3 or MP4 format. Now, open your iTunes library and drag the converted files into it. The files will then be copied to your iPhone when you hook your iPhone to your PC.

It is rather unfortunate that you cannot directly copy videos from the internet to your iPhone yet; but perhaps, in the future, this will no longer be impossible.

The weekend is the perfect time to get started on computer projects that you just didn't have time for during the week. This weekend, my project of choice is backups. Although I can safely say that the majority of my files are (relatively) safe in the cloud, it never hurts to make a run through and upload those that got overlooked.

My documents are spread out across Google Docs, Office Live, SkyDrive, and Box.net. My photos are on flickr and Facebook. My music and video collections are backed up locally to multiple external drives (since I'm too cheap to pay for the hundreds of gigs of online storage needed), but one thing that wasn't backed up anywhere but on my own PC was the thing that may be the most important of all: my iPhone.

Although iTunes does a good backup of your phone prior to each sync, that won't do you a lot of good unless that backup is also stored somewhere else besides your own PC. Computers crash, hard drives fail, and sometimes, sadly, laptops are even lost or stolen. How Do You Backup Your Contacts? The Results of the Twitter/FriendFeed Poll

Is an iTunes backup stored off-site the most efficient way to go? Is that how most people handle this issue? Curious, I did what any social media addict would do: I asked Twitter and FriendFeed. The answers I received have me pondering my options. After receiving nearly 30 responses, I was surprised to find how many people rely on Google as their address book (14 responses). In fact, keeping your addresses and phone numbers in Google and syncing that address book to your iPhone is actually what a lot of people consider a "backup" these days.

But as much as I trust in Google, the old I.T. girl in me can't help but think "single point of failure, single point of failure!" Truth be told, several folks must feel the same because they also used another method on top of the Google solution, often MobileMe.

MobileMe wasn't as popular as I would have expected, though. Only five people said they used it. That number would probably be higher if it wasn't a paid service.

Seven people counted on iTunes to do the backup for them, but a few were careful to also make sure their PC was backed up as well.

I'm hesitant to sync my Google contacts to my iPhone for reasons I've stated before, but it couldn't hurt to make sure that my iPhone contact information also exists in my online address book...something that I know isn't the case as I recently found out when the phone's battery died during a phone call and I frantically searched for my friend's number on the web.

iPhone Contact Backup: Yep, There's An App for That

I also recently happened across an additional solution which you could add to your backup routine with ease. Called iDrive Lite, this free iPhone application will quickly backup all your contact info to your device in case you ever accidentally delete an important address or phone number. You'll also want to activate the app's "Web Enable" feature which backs up your contact data to the web where you can access it anytime at idrivelite.com. Not bad for a free service.

Another great thing about the Kindle iPhone app is that it gives the reader a full-color version of the images from its LCD screen, as opposed to the Kindle's shades of gray. What it cannot do however, is permanently replace the Kindle as the choice reading device. While the iPhone acts as a perfect foil to the Kindle, the latter's e-paper technology, wide screen, and superior readability is still the best device for hours of nonstop reading.

The Kindle for iPhone application is very exiting but there are a couple of disadvantages. For instance you cannot buy books from Amazon with the iPhone. You can't browse through the Kindle library and you can't read magazines or newspapers either. The application only lets you read ebooks. These features are probably going to be resolved at a later date, so they are not great concerns, but something to think about. The application is still great and recommended to everyone.

Synchronize Lotus Notes to your iPhone

When Macintosh launched the iPhone in 2007, Time Magazine named it 'The invention of the year'. People lined up to be the first to buy one. The higher capacity iPhone 3B that Macintosh came out with the next year was even more amazing, and now we're all anxiously awaiting the new iPhone due to hit stores summer. But Lotus Notes users aren't thrilled with one particular iPhone problem. They aren't able to sync their Lotus Notes data with their iCal or Address Book. The Macintosh synching program, iSync, won't sync Lotus Notes data - and that's a drag.

We already know that the iPhone has quickly become one of the most important mobile platforms, and today, O'Reilly's Ben Lorica took a closer look at the developers behind the most successful applications on the iPhone. Currently, the App Store features about 40,000 different apps, and on average, a typical seller or developer will have about 3.42 apps in the store, though these numbers are somewhat skewed by a few highly prolific developers who publish a lot of apps that are relatively easy to create.

Games and eBooks

Obviously, a game developer won't be able to churn out new applications at the same rate as an eBook publisher. Game developers have, on average, 2.3 apps in the store (looking at data from the last week), while a typical eBook vendor is selling almost 18 apps right now.

Books are also currently the fastest growing category in the App Store (285% in the last three months), mostly because vendors can simply pack different texts into separate applications. Compared to other categories, productivity apps are only growing slowly, though the number of apps in this category still grew 58% over the last 12 weeks.

One-Hit Wonders

Looking only at paid apps, Lorica also found that 6.3% of all sellers have had an application that made it to the App Store's "Top Paid Apps" list, though about 80% of these were one-hit wonders. On average, a top paid app will remain in this list for 13 days.

While the App Store generally gives every developer a chance to showcase their products, for game developers, the picture is a bit less democratic. Here, the top 27 sellers account for 28% of all the apps that appeared in the Top Paid Games list. Puzzle games, by the way, represent 1 in 4 games in the store.

iPhones have great amount of features and have tools that are way ahead of standard cell phone. Add this together with its ease of use and great styling, you have a winner. It also comes with the best of Web 2.0 display and toys.

In fact, the iPhone has many things going for it, but does it have FM radio for iPhone? But for some reason when apple were adding the digital camera, web access to Google maps and all the other cool features, the FM radio was not on the list

Out Of Date

Actually the main reason why there is no FM radio for iPhone is that today, the interest in FM radio is less than in the past. The Internet and TV are dominating the market for eyeballs. This is especially true when you consider the target market Apple is aiming at - young people with disposable income.

After all, it is not the fifties or sixties when radio was central to entertainment and information distribution. Now days the Internet is the first step for most people looking to find out information.

Another possible reason why there is no FM radio for iPhone is that the radio is not a very personable device. It can be a disruptive influence in our lives rather an asset. Of course, if the iPhone had been around when the Sony walkman was invented, chances are that there would certainly have been a radio.

In fact, the Sony walkman had become popular with the public before a radio was added to it. This lack of a radio in the original Walkman can be seen as a reason why manufacturers have not included FM radio for iPhone.

Still, you might wonder if the iPhone can have Internet connectivity, then why is there no FM radio? After all, the iPhone is multi-media should have indeed been included. The answer to this may lie in the fact that there is always iTunes to listen to and thus there is really no need.

However, it is only Apple that can best answer that question. The reasons for omitting this feature would no doubt be due to practicality or maybe lack of need. However, consumers have yet to be informed by Apple regarding and so we can only guess as to the reason why.

The latest 2009 JD Power Consumer Smartphone Satisfaction Study numbers are in. And the winner is … the iPhone. Apple's device nearly swept every category, with top marks in operating system, features, ease of operation, physical design and overall satisfaction. In fact, the only device it didn't receive the highest marks in was "battery aspects."

Looking at the chart, all of Apple's rivals in the smartphone field were middling. HTC, Motorola, Palm, RIM and Samsung had mostly 2 or 3 stars across the board where Apple had 5. LG faired second best with 4 stars across the board expect for operating system, where it got 3.

Palm should feel okay knowing that early reports on its upcoming Pre device have it battling the iPhone in design, operating system and features. Perhaps next year, Apple won't sweep so easily through the field. Of course, its weak spot, battery, may be improved shortly with the launch of the next version of the iPhone, which may happen this summer.

Speaking of battery, that's the only category RIM did well in. And according to the consumers surveyed, that was the least important feature (in terms of this survey) of the device. That can't be good new for the BlackBerry-maker, as consumers largely viewed its devices as "meh."

Overall, Apple scored 791 on a 1,000-point scale. LG was second with 772 and Samsung third with 759.

Like many people, I have a music library that's way too large to fit on my iPhone. (Yo, Apple! Can we please get a 64GB model already?) Fortunately, I can still listen to every track I own thanks to Simplify Music 2.0 (formerly Simplify Media).

The app streams tunes from your PC by way of a music-server program that's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. Download it, install it, then choose the folders you want it to scan, monitor, and queue. (Alas, the program can't stream DRM-protected iTunes purchases, so it's time to move everything to iTunes Plus.)

The desktop software costs nothing. The Simplify Music iPhone app has an introductory price of $2.99, but the developer plans to bump it to $5.99 in a few weeks.

Once everything's installed and configured, just leave your system running and hit the road. When you run the app, you'll be able to browse your entire desktop music library by album, artist, genre, or song. Tap what you want and presto: the music plays, complete with album art and even song lyrics (which is so cool, it single-handedly justifies the cost of the app).

Want even more variety? Get some buddies on board: you can stream music from friends' music libraries in addition to your own.

Version 2.0 adds some nifty amenities, including a search function (something the iPhone itself doesn't have--yet), an add-to-favorites option for building an on-the-fly playlist, and a "scrub bar" for easy backward/forward scanning.

As you might expect, a Wi-Fi connection produces the best sound quality, though 3G runs it a close second when you have four or five bars. Even over EDGE, Simplify Music delivered surprisingly good sound, about on par with FM radio.

Though the app was sometimes annoyingly slow to connect to my PC, for the most part it worked like a charm. And much as I'm loathe to leave my system running 24-7, I'm now hopelessly addicted to having access to all my music.

Simplify Music makes that a reality, meaning I'll probably think twice about springing for a new iPhone just to get more memory. With the money I save, I'll be able to buy a lot more tunes.

Papa Johns Says iPhone App is a Dud - Maybe They Should Try Launching a Real One

At the OMMA Mobile conference on Wednesday, Jim McDonnell, marketing manager, emerging channels for Papa John's International, shared some bad news about the potential for mobile applications associated with a business. In short, he basically called the Papa John's iPhone app a dud, saying that the company hasn't "seen anything that really delivers for us as well as mobile display advertising," and based on the numbers, the company has decided not to expand to other mobile platforms.

Oh no! The iPhone doesn't deliver? Businesses take heed? Well, that's what it sounds like. Except there's just one small problem here: Papa John's doesn't have an iPhone app - they have a mobile web site.

According to an article on Mediapost, McDonnell is quoted as saying "we haven't seen numbers that really made us think we need to be everywhere else yet," when speaking of the company's decision to refrain from branching out to other mobile platforms.

In fact, if you read through the article, the doom-and-gloom story of the Papa John's iPhone app disaster may have you wondering if iPhone apps for businesses are even worthwhile.

After reading through the article, although confused as to the supposed app's failure, on a personal level I was excited. I didn't even know that Papa John's had an iPhone application, but I was definitely interested in downloading it. You see, where I live, Papa John's is the only pizza place that delivers. I've been eagerly awaiting an iPhone application like this since our household tends to order Papa John's pizza about once a month (well, if we aren't on diets). I immediately hopped over to iTunes and did a search. Query: "Papa John's" - no Papa John's apps found. Query: "Papa Johns" - still, no go. What gives? They were talking about an iPhone application, right?

Apparently not.

Actually, what Papa John's has is a mobile web site at mobile.papajohns.com/iphone, which offers a store locator and shortcuts that take you to the main mobile ordering system - a system that sees 50% of its traffic from iPhones, by the way. And that's what McDonnell was referring to: a mobile web site.

Say what you want, but a mobile site is NOT an app. If it were, then the Papa John's app could do nifty things like tap into the iPhone's GPS to display the nearest stores to the user's current location and offer those store's current specials. It could store user account information in its settings so that every time the app was launched, it would remember your latest order...maybe even have a button that let you reorder with one click. And so much more.

But all it does is let you order from a mobile web site or locate a store...you know, manually.

Given its limited nature, it wouldn't be surprising if Papa John's was only having moderate success with this "app"/mobile site. But the thing is, they are. According to McDonnell, the "app" has driven $1 million in revenue to the company. Um, that's actually kind of good. Now imagine what a REAL app could do. Unfortunately, McDonnel says Papa John's just isn't ready - they're only "dipping their toe in the pond" now and don't want to spend money on a honest-to-goodness iPhone application yet, much less start developing for other platforms.

Well, that's a shame because they haven't really even dipped their toe into the iPhone platform yet.

Papa John's, let us know when you actually launch an iPhone application, then you can tell us how well it works for you.

Smub.it offers a drop-dead simple social sharing and bookmarking tool that proves especially useful for iPhone and other smart phone users.

Smub, which stands for "smart multi-use bookmarking," requires only that users type "smub.it/" to the left of the URL they wish to bookmark or share. Then, whether it's viewed on a mobile device or a computer, the browser goes to Smub's ten-button interface where users are presented with a modest but functional selection of link-sharing options. The service effectively eliminates the need for copy/paste functions and takes a few steps out of iPhone users' sharing process.

While the link-sharing part of the service doesn't require a login, the bookmarking function does require users to register accounts. For unregistered users, Smub also currently doesn't store login information for third-party web tools or allow for OAuth or Open Social authentication, requiring users to enter usernames and passwords each time they share a link.

Todd Montgomery, Smub's Marketing and Business Development VP, spoke with us Sunday afternoon, saying, "I know particularly people who tweet do it frequently. Unless you're registered on Smub, it still requires you to log in to third-party services each time you share a link. This is something we're working on for the future."

Other long-term plans include allowing users to define and add other sharing/bookmarking sites outside of the initial nine.

Montgomery and the rest of the Smub team don't see the service as a stop-gap solution until smart phones get smarter, and they plan to add value across web and mobile interfaces. In addition to allowing users to export their content, he said, "We're also coming up with a list function. Instead of having to bookmark each link, you can create a list. Now, your friends will only have to go to one destination to see all the associated links," a function the Smub team thinks will be especially useful for academics and researchers.

Although their initial core focus is on the iPhone, Smub will be optimizing the user interface for Blackberries and other smart phones, as well.

Determine iPhone OS Version

There are two ways to find the version of the OS running on an iPhone: either on the iPhone itself or via iTunes.

If you want to do it through the iPhone, click on Settings and then General.

Now click on About and you should see a entry called Version. Next to that is the current iPhone OS version running on the device.

It’s also really easy to check via iTunes. Just plug in your phone and when iTunes detects it, click on the entry to get a summary:

WikiHow, a Wikipedia-like project that aims to build the world's largest repository of how-to articles, released an interesting iPhone application this morning. The application (iTunes link) gives you access to wikiHow's vast collection of how-to articles about topics ranging from how to be a twitter celebrity to how to build your own picnic table. Most interestingly, the application also contains a "Survival Kit," which is cached on the phone (or iPod touch) for offline reading, and which includes articles about topics like the Heimlich Maneuver or how to survive a plane crash.

The app works pretty much like you would expect it. You can browse the survival kit, as well as a selection of featured articles. Of course, you can also search through wikiHow's archives of about 50,000 how-tos and bookmark the most interesting articles.

One neat feature of the app is that it goes into full-screen mode when you tilt the phone horizontally. Whenever you feel like reading a random how-to article, you just have to shake the phone.

Six months ago we pointed out the best Android apps to boost your mobile productivity, but since then more free applications have appeared in the Market that offer useful features you don't want to miss.

Let's take a look at a few notable free apps that make getting things done with your Android handset easier and more fun. All of these are available in the Android Market on your phone; the apps that have dedicated web sites are linked below.

Gmote: Turn Android into a remote control for your computer and its music and movies with Gmote. Perfect for controlling your media center PC under the television from the couch, Gmote can browse what media files you want to play and offers regular play, pause, rewind, and volume controls (as shown). Alternately, you can go into Gmote's touchpad mode and drive the mouse on your computer screen with your phone, launching and switching applications. Gmote requires that you install server software on your computer as well as the Android app to work.

Sticky: Android doesn't come with a built in notes application, but Sticky will give you colored digital Post-Its you can hide or show, drag and drop around your Android home screen.

Nightwatch: If you charge your phone on your nightstand while you sleep, you want Nightwatch. Nightwatch converts Android into a fullscreen clock automatically when you plug it in to charge.

Hungry!: Simplify your visits to the supermarket with Hungry!, a grocery shopping application. Enter the list of items you need to pick up at the grocery store, and check them off as you buy them with Hungry!. You can email your shopping list to your spouse with Hungry!, and see your purchase history and top most-bought items, as well.

Shake Awake: One of Android's annoyances (that will hopefully be fixed in future releases) is lack of easy access to the keypad when you're on a call. Right now, when you're on a call, Android slips into sleep mode, which means you have to mess with the wake button to punch in numbers on the keypad (like a teleconference PIN or to use any number-driven menu system). Shake Awake is here to fix that annoyance: While you're on a call, a quick movement of the handset wakes up Android for easy keypad access.

Useful Switchers: Easily toggle and configure Android's settings with Useful Switchers, an all-in-one settings panel. Set your ringer behavior (sound and/or vibration), toggle your Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Airplane Mode, and GPS on and off, set your screen brightness and timeout, and even launch a handy flashlight (bright white screen) all from one pane in Useful Switchers.

Contacts Clean-up: If you're the type who likes all of the dollar bills in your wallet smoothed out, all facing the same way, and sorted by denomination, then you probably want all your contacts' phone numbers to be in the same format, too. Contacts Clean-up does just that: you enter the phone number format you like best (with or without dashes, dots, country codes, etc), and Contacts Clean-up will sweep through your contacts list and reformat them all in one shot.

ActionComplete: Practitioners of David Allen's Getting Things Done productivity system should check out ActionComplete, and GTD manager for Android. Set up your projects, next actions, wait list, and pending lists in ActionComplete, and associate people, places, and tags with each. ActionComplete will notify you when something is due—or if you've got location-awareness on, if you're in the place you've got something to do. (I haven't tested the location awareness/places feature thoroughly myself, but head into the app's preferences to turn on location awareness.) ActionComplete's web site says a web-based version of the app is "coming soon" as well.

No Signal Alert: When you walk into any dead zone where your phone's got zero bars of cell reception, No Signal Alert lets you know. Especially useful for when you're expecting that important call that just isn't coming (because it can't!), No Signal Alert offers audio, vibration, and status bar alerts when you've got no bars.

Free Dictionary Org: Ok, it's not the fanciest dictionary we've ever used, but it's free and it works like you'd expect: you enter a word to look up (and it suggests words as you tap), and Free Dictionary Org displays a definition fetched from the web (so it doesn't work offline).

Weather Channel: While it's not the prettiest weather application you'll ever see, the Weather Channel app is serious about giving you the current conditions, hourly, 36-hour, and 10-day forecast. Set up multiple places in this app for easy crowing about how perfect it is in San Diego while your relatives are getting hailed on in Oklahoma.

Locale: Make sure your ringer switches to vibrate during that weekly meeting, but goes on full blast at home with Locale, a location-aware settings manager for Android. Based on conditions like battery power, location, date, or time, Locale can change Android's settings automatically for you.

Even six months later, previously mentioned Compare Everywhere, Shazam, and AnyCut are still prime free Android apps, as well as Secrets password manager and GV for Google Voice users.

Skype for iPhone

First, let's talk about the interface. In short, it's about as close to the PC/Mac client in style and utility as it can possibly get. Contacts, instant messenger, dialing pad, call history and profile can all be accessed at any time via the navigation bar at the bottom. Here's some more of the primary features:

Contacts can be listed alphabetically or by who is online.
You can see all ongoing chats or just new chat messages.
When calling out, there is a button that links to the iPhone address book.
Call history can be switched from everything to missed calls.
The info page lets you update your status (even with a photo!), access your profile, change your status, buy more credit and check your voicemail.

Rest assured the interface is slick and the app works as promised. But, I think the real reason why we are all so excited about this release over other Skype-enabled iPhone apps like Fring or Truphone is simply how much it works like its desktop-bound big brother that we know and love. Instant messaging chats just work. Group chats just work. Getting at-a-glance status on your Skype friends just works. The bottom line is, other apps may get the job done, but due to bad interface design, a critical missing feature, or trying to do too much, are not a pleasure to use. This client actually is a pleasure.

With all that said, it's still not perfect. It's better than everything else Skype-related on the iPhone, yes, but optimally it could support Skype SMS (though the carriers would probably never allow it), notification of new IMs when the app isn't in use (hopefully coming shortly after the iPhone 3.0 firmware hits), and.. well, support for video. Why not? People were recording MMS videos with their cellphones in 2004. The Japanese have had dual-camera phones with live video streaming for quite a while now.

And yes, I do realize the camera is on the back of the iPhone, making it hard to use the screen and the cam at the same time. I don't care. It's time Apple realized people are willing to trade some battery life for the ability to record a short video and start allowing apps that support it. But, until that day comes, Skype for the iPhone is highly recommended. I have already put it up on the first page next to Tweetie and DVR Remote. KUALA LUMPUR, March 20 (Bernama) -- Maxis Communications Bhd expects mobile Internet users to increase with the launch of Apple iPhone 3G (third-generation) today.
Its chief marketing officer, Matthew Willsher, said with the availability of the phone, it could generate more interest in mobile Net usage.
He said currently, of its 11 million customers, 4.4 million were using mobile Net.
"We are seeing exponential potential in mobile data growth. With the launch of iPhone, I think it will strengthen Maxis' competitiveness," he said at the launch of the phone by Deputy Minister Energy, Water and Communications, Datuk Joseph Salang, here today.Willsher said the company planned to tap the Smart phone market on the back of its year-on-year growth of 25 percent.He said thousands had pre-booked the iPhone since it was opened for registration nine days ago. However, he declined to elaborate.
Currently, Maxis holds 42 percent market share in terms of subscriber base.
Maxis has been negotiating with Apple for the past five months on the iPhone deal.
The phone is sold in 85 countries and has about 25,000 applications that can be downloaded.
Apple is currently the third largest mobile phone maker by value behind Nokia and Samsung.
Maxis also presented iPhone 3G to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at a separate event in Cyberjaya.
