TapLynx_logo.pngHave you ever wanted to create an iPhone app, but can't code your way out of a wet paper bag? Users of NewsGator's NetNewsWire iPhone news reader will have to wait a little longer for the next version of that application because its creator, Brent Simmons has been busy working on a new iPhone framework called TapLynx. The goal of TapLynx is to help users generate topic-focused media applications for the iPhone without any programming required. The first application, created by Simmons, has already been built for All Things Digital.

Fans of NetNewsWire who have been patiently waiting for an updated version shouldn't have to wait too much longer. The next generation of the NetNewsWire iPhone app, which promises to have added functionality like the ability to mark news items as unread and send articles to Instapaper, is said to be based on TapLynx.

According to NewsGator's Brent Simmons:

"The idea behind TapLynx is that you can take a collection of feeds and some artwork, make choices about colors and gradients and behavior (all in a configuration file you edit), then create an iPhone app. Without doing any programming.

But you can do programming if you want to -- use TapLynx as the base and add more features. (In fact, that's what I'm doing with NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone -- it's a custom app built on TapLynx.)"

Being able to rapidly develop customizable and unique iPhone apps with no need to learn Cocoa is great news to those of us who are interested in building such apps, but know very little about developing them. We are anxiously awaiting for TapLynx to make its way out of beta, but meanwhile you can sign up for the SDK here and the company will let us know when it becomes available. Be sure to follow @taplynx on Twitter.

Download Videos To iPhone - Several Ways To Do It

By Davion Wong

If you have just bought an iPhone, you are probably thinking of ways you can download videos to iPhone. After all, watching videos can be very entertaining. A lot of people are hooked to it. Downloading videos to your iPhone means that you can watch your favorite videos anytime and anywhere.

As you must know, an iPhone, is one of the recent babies of Apple. It has gained a lot of popularity because of the many features it comes with. You don't just get to use the iPhone to call your friends or send them text messages like any normal mobile phone. Your iPhone lets you do many things, too, like browse the internet, for one, listen to music, play games, and of course watch videos. All these you can do in your own time.

iPhone video downloads are available at Apple's iTunes store. Before you can download any video from iTunes, though, you need to set up an account with iTunes first. Don't worry, getting yourself registered does not require you to break an arm and a leg. The site is user-friendly so you are not going to run into any trouble setting an account with iTunes.

When you set up an account with iTunes, you will be required to download the iTunes software as well. This is not an option but a requirement to enable video downloads to your iPhone. The software provides a gateway for the files from the internet to be transferred to your PC and then from your PC you can transfer the files to your iPhone.

Of course, iTunes is not the only place you can download videos from. If you are an avid fan of YouTube, it should please you to know that you can download YouTube videos to your iPhone as well. First, though, you need to download the YouTube to iPhone converter. This application is free and it comes with no viruses or spyware.

Assuming you have already done that, you can now add your favorite YouTube video links. Then choose a location where you wish to store the downloaded video files and convert the files to MP3 or MP4 format. Now, open your iTunes library and drag the converted files into it. The files will then be copied to your iPhone when you hook your iPhone to your PC.

It is rather unfortunate that you cannot directly copy videos from the internet to your iPhone yet; but perhaps, in the future, this will no longer be impossible.

My site has loads of information about video downloads, iPhone features, and many other things. Take a moment to visit it now if you want to download videos to iPhone.

Do you want to design your own iPhone app, but don't know how to get started?

Well, Luke Kilpatrick not only runs Fire On The Bay, San Francisco's Adobe Fireworks User Group, but he designs apps for a living. In this video interview with Robert Scoble, Kilpatrick shows how you can get started without writing any code or doing anything too hard.

Yes, it's only a mock-up, but if you get it started like this, then you have something you can show your friends to see if they are interested before you spend a ton of cash on a development team.

Check out Fire On The Bay's resource page here for some more tutorials and help.

Reader Feedback: How Do You Backup Your iPhone Contacts?

via ReadWriteWeb by Sarah Perez on 6/12/09

The weekend is the perfect time to get started on computer projects that you just didn't have time for during the week. This weekend, my project of choice is backups. Although I can safely say that the majority of my files are (relatively) safe in the cloud, it never hurts to make a run through and upload those that got overlooked.

My documents are spread out across Google Docs, Office Live, SkyDrive, and Box.net. My photos are on flickr and Facebook. My music and video collections are backed up locally to multiple external drives (since I'm too cheap to pay for the hundreds of gigs of online storage needed), but one thing that wasn't backed up anywhere but on my own PC was the thing that may be the most important of all: my iPhone.

Sponsor

Although iTunes does a good backup of your phone prior to each sync, that won't do you a lot of good unless that backup is also stored somewhere else besides your own PC. Computers crash, hard drives fail, and sometimes, sadly, laptops are even lost or stolen. Obviously, an iTunes-only backup is not a good system for the most important social network of them all - the people I actually speak to in real life. The people in my phone.

How Do You Backup Your Contacts? The Results of the Twitter/FriendFeed Poll

Is an iTunes backup stored off-site the most efficient way to go? Is that how most people handle this issue? Curious, I did what any social media addict would do: I asked Twitter and FriendFeed. The answers I received have me pondering my options. After receiving nearly 30 responses, I was surprised to find how many people rely on Google as their address book (14 responses). In fact, keeping your addresses and phone numbers in Google and syncing that address book to your iPhone is actually what a lot of people consider a "backup" these days.

But as much as I trust in Google, the old I.T. girl in me can't help but think "single point of failure, single point of failure!" Truth be told, several folks must feel the same because they also used another method on top of the Google solution, often MobileMe.

MobileMe wasn't as popular as I would have expected, though. Only five people said they used it. That number would probably be higher if it wasn't a paid service.

Seven people counted on iTunes to do the backup for them, but a few were careful to also make sure their PC was backed up as well.

I'm hesitant to sync my Google contacts to my iPhone for reasons I've stated before, but it couldn't hurt to make sure that my iPhone contact information also exists in my online address book...something that I know isn't the case as I recently found out when the phone's battery died during a phone call and I frantically searched for my friend's number on the web.

iPhone Contact Backup: Yep, There's An App for That

I also recently happened across an additional solution which you could add to your backup routine with ease. Called iDrive Lite, this free iPhone application will quickly backup all your contact info to your device in case you ever accidentally delete an important address or phone number. You'll also want to activate the app's "Web Enable" feature which backs up your contact data to the web where you can access it anytime at idrivelite.com. Not bad for a free service.

Your Turn! RWW Poll

If you didn't have a chance to participate in the Twitter poll, please participate in this one below. Now, we know not everyone is an iPhone user here at RWW, but we know that a lot of you are, so let us know how you backup your contacts! If you find yourself marking "other," feel free to comment and explain.

Legal iPod Music Downloads - 3 Places To Get

By Davion Wong

Are you looking for legal ipod music downloads? Well, if you are, you certainly are not the only one. There are at least hundreds of searches every single day by iPod users on Google looking for places where they can find legal ipod music downloads. An interesting fact to note that most are at the same time hoping they can get them cheaper than iTunes.

Here is a list of 3 sources where all iPod users can obtain legal iPod music downloads.

1. Mainstream Sites Like Napster

Mainstreams are probably nothing new to you. All MP3 users know that they can download quality iPod music from sites like Amazon, HMV, EMusic and other mainstream services. However, a fair comparison with iTunes put them in the same league. Pricing is too competitive and you hardly see differences except the occasions where music albums are offered in bundled deals at cheaper rates.

2. Free Websites

Not all free websites are lousy and promote illegally uploaded music. There are some new musicians, the lesser known ones who promote their music via networks like torrents, P2P and their personal blogs, or even YouTube. These are also the favorite haunts of talent scouts and they discover new artists there. You can find some quality legal iPod music downloads there.

3. Paid Membership Sites

What are they? These services offer you instant and unlimited access to millions of legal iPod music downloads without the usual exorbitant pricings you are so used to. For less than $50, one can download as many media files, not just music but other files like movies, music videos, TV shows, games and useful software for iPod. The adolescent particularly enjoys such services. After all, it is a great money saver. There are even parents who subscribe to these services so that their kids can use them.

Now, you are better equipped than most folks in terms of your knowledge. Are you ready to get your unlimited constant supply of legal iPod music downloads without breaking the bank?

When Did You Buy Your Last App? Survey Says It was Over the Weekend

via ReadWriteWeb by Sarah Perez on 6/8/09

It's no surprise that people spend their weekends goofing off, relaxing, and entertaining themselves, but our weekly downtime activities also have major implications for mobile application marketing, as it turns out. According to new data from Flurry, a mobile analytics company, consumers are over 30% more likely to download an application over a weekend than during the week.

Sponsor

Not only are people more likely to download apps over the weekend, they're more likely to pay for applications over the weekend, too. This is perhaps because they've tested the free version during the week and then decide to upgrade to the paid version over the weekend when they have more time to play. Or perhaps paid apps are just becoming an alternative to the more expensive forms of weekend entertainment from days past as we continue to suffer through a down economy and tighter household budgets.

In any case, Flurry reports that free games are downloaded 26% more times on a weekend day versus a weekday, while paid games are downloaded almost 50% more times. Other non-game applications show similar trends with 27% increases for free apps and 36% for paid.

Given these findings, Flurry suggests that developers considering timing their launches to take advantage of these apparent trends. For example, app developers could launch their apps early in the week to encourage free-to-paid conversion sales over the weekend.

These numbers came from the latest Flurry Industry Pulse, an ongoing status check report for the mobile industry. This past month's report is conducted from a sample size of 200 applications, 25 million consumers and four platforms: Apple (iPhone and iPod Touch), Blackberry, JavaME, and Google Android.

The iPhone And Options You Hold In Performing A Jailbreak

By Chris Channing

There has been a large buzz around the process of the act of using a jailbreak to truly unlock your iPhone's true potential. But the process isn't something that just anyone can do, and it will cost money on top of the money you already paid for the iPhone. Whether the benefit is worth it or not is what you should focus on.

Unlocking the iPhone allows the user to change service providers by changing the Subscriber Identity Model(SIM). In the most drastic of cases, you could take your phone around the world changing the SIM and never have to pay roaming charges by using local services. In more normal cases this would allow you to use a service provider that that has a stronger signal in your area.

The iPhone comes standard with no ability to read or write system files; hindering the user's ability to use third party applications. By unlocking or doing a "jailbreak," your iPhone is opened up to a multitude of applications that are not available with a standard iPhone.

Unlocking your iPhone is quite the useful change, but in case you are weary about this, there are guides on the internet that help in the process of getting the most out of your precious iPhone. These guides vary in their usefulness, so some research is recommended before you try anything definitive. Some good guides can be found by using search engines, but some of the more useful ones will likely come from testimonials of friends.

The warranty that comes with your iPhone probably hasn't been read- that's normal. But you should consider at least skimming over the details over the warranty so that you know what you can and can't do. Some guides claim that you can jailbreak the iPhone without voiding the warranty. That's a large claim to be making, and you should be checking it against the warranty to ensure that you won't be having a bad day when your iPhone needs repair in the future.

Software developers actually have good use of the process used to jailbreak the iPhone. Developers need to practice and test their applications under several different conditions. By using the iPhone to do so, developers are better able to review their program before they decide to submit it to Apple for an official look. You'll need all the help you can get, so don't overlook this step.

In Conclusion

You can make money by saving money- this is something that can be done by unlocking your iPhone. Just remember to weigh the benefits you would actually be making use of against the cost of the equipment or labor needed to modify the iPhone- and then make an informed decision.

iPhone Ringtones Customized For You

By Thom Yarbrough

You no longer have to pay iTunes 99 cents for every iPhone ringtone you want. In fact, using one of two methods, you can create your iPhone ringtones for free using a 16-step process or acquire a program designed to create your iPhone ringtones simply.

iPhone Ringtones can come from a variety of places. Movies. Music files. Also, you can record sounds from your daily life. Like your child saying, "Daddy, your phone is ringing." There are endless options for creative ringtones.

It seems that everyone wants an iPhone. They have so many great features and among those features, ringtones seem at the top of the list. iPhone users want to set ringtones for each of their contacts; this means that when a specific contact, a ringtone matched to him will ring.

Matching a contact with a ringtone is easier than you'd think. If your dad is a country music fan, you can use his favorite Garth Brooks tune as a ringtone. If your brother-in-law loves football, create a ringtone that's the NFL theme song. If your sister and family are argumentative, use the Married with Childred theme song. Go wild.

Create iPhone ringtones 1 of 2 ways. This first way has 16 steps and it involves Apple's GarageBand.

1) On your Mac, run iTunes and then GarageBand.

2) In iTunes, select the tune that you want to grab.

3) Within your GarageBand, select "File", then "New".

4) A timeline of a single track is shown in GarageBand. You'll want to delete this track. To accomplish this, select the track and click "Delete Track" from the "Track" menu at the top of GarageBand.

5) You'll need to drag and drop the song from iTunes to GarageBand. You'll see it's quickly imported.

6) Scroll thru the song in GarageBand. Then select the 30 second segment you want to be your new iPhone ringtone.

7) Now you need to remove all the music ahead of where you want your ringtone to start. First click the track. Then click on "Split" from the "Edit" menu at the top. This will separate the track where you have your mouse located. Unselect the track and click on the segment you'd like to delete. Press delete. Repeat for the end of the ringtone.

9) Pull the start of the ringtone to the far left of the track timeline.

10) About a half-second or so into the beginning of the track, click the volume line to create an end point. Next, click and drag the beginning of the volume line down to zero volume.

11) Repeat this step for the end of the ringtone.

12) Now preview it and see if you like how it sounds. If you do, save it.

13) To make sure that the song repeats as your phone rings, click on the button to turn the cycle region on and off (at the bottom of the GarageBand window). It is the button on the far right that looks like a set of arrows.

14) Once the button is pressed, a yellow line will show above the track. With your mouse, pull the right side of the line so that it goes all through your ringtone. Press Save.

15) Now send the file to iTunes. To do this, click "Share", then "Send Ringtone to iTunes." Instantly it's converted and sent to iTunes.

16) To move the ringtone to your iPhone, connect the iPhone while iTunes is open. Select the iPhone in the Devices list on the left side of iTunes, then click on the Ringtones tab. Make sure that Sync Ringtones is checked. Click Sync, and your ringtone is copied to the iPhone.

This does seem like a complicated process. If you'd prefer something a little simpler, consider PocketMac RingtoneStudio for iPhone. It does all of this with a simple drag and drop.

Download Movies To iPhone - Watching Movies On The Go

By Davion Wong

Movie freaks must be practically dying to learn how to download movies to iPhone. If watching movies is more than just a past time, you certainly would wish you can have a device that lets you watch movies anytime and anywhere.

Even if you are not exactly a movie freak, but do not have the time to go to the movie theatres, you will certainly welcome the idea of getting to watch movies while on the go. Thankfully, there are many mobile devices that you can use to watch movies wherever you are, and one of these is an iPhone.

An iPhone is thus a great thing to have. Developed by Apple, this pocket-sized gadget is available in a variety of models, and enables you to do so many things. You can call your friends or send them text messages. You can also surf the internet with your iPhone, listen to great music, play your favorite games, and of course, you also get to watch as many movies and videos as you want.

The safest way of downloading iPhone movies is through Apple?s iTunes store. You must register for an account with iTunes first before you can enable iPhone movie downloads. Once you have done that, you must download the iTunes software application so you can download the files that you need to your computer.

You need to download the iTunes software because this will enable you to transfer the files from the internet to your PC and from your PC to your iPhone. So far making a direct download of movies to iPhone is not yet possible; thus the most that you can do is to transfer the files to your PC first and then when they?re already there, you can attach your iPhone to your PC to automatically transfer the files from PC to iPhone.

There are other sites on the net where you can also make downloads of movies as well as anything else. However, in case you encounter peer to peer sites, stay away from them. Although they?re free, these sites are not safe to download from. They contain viruses and spyware applications that can cause a lot of damage to your system.

If you insist on downloading from other sites besides iTunes, go for certified legitimate sites. Now how can you be sure if it?s legal or not; check out iPhone downloading review sites. Here you will get to see a list of the top downloading sites for iPhone and which of them offers the best features. Try joining techno forums, too, and interact with iPhone experts.

iPod Video Personal Trainer From Langhorne - Is It Really Possible?

By Kareem F Samhouri, DPT, CSCS, HFI

The iPod Video and the iPhone have revolutionized the way personal training is offered around the world. In truth, many people now see the iPod as a replacement for having someone demonstrate exercise in the gym. Through the technological boom, the use of digital video, and the increased awareness of health around the world, it's no wonder that the iPod workout is taking over.

In fact, some fitness professionals have even managed to create video courses, simulating public speaking environments with Powerpoint format and video voice over in order to offer people an even greater value through their subscription to iPod workouts. It is actually possible now to enjoy many forms of multimedia through an iPod video or an iPhone, not just music.

One example of the "portable personal trainer" that is taking place involves an email delivery service, where you receive a couple of workouts for the week. You can then download the corresponding videos to your iPod, from which you can carry the exercises to the gym. Previously, the large majority of online fitness training stemmed from home workouts and/or e-books. Through the use of video, that is accessible on an iPod, new horizons have been reached and new levels of long-distance fitness coaching are available.

Most fitness professionals would agree that choosing a personal trainer is a careful decision that requires thought and analysis of skill set. With the opportunity today to be trained by some of the best fitness professionals in the whole world through cutting-edge technology, there is no longer a reason to settle. After all, this is your body, and you only get one.

Technological advances, such as the iPod Video, are causing many fields to improve. For example, portable exercise video has allowed, for the first time, the ability to hear and see exercise at the same time while at the gym. It's important to acknowledge that advances in technology have allowed barriers between long-distance fitness coaches and clients to be broken.
